“Democracy Only Works When Citizens Refuse to Surrender Their Power” — Akeem Salawu

The convener of the Apero Mekunu Movement, Akeem Salawu, has emphasised the critical role of citizens in sustaining democratic governance, noting that democracy thrives only when people remain actively engaged in the political process.
According to Salawu, democracy is not sustained by institutions alone but by the vigilance, participation, and collective responsibility of the people. He noted that when citizens vote, speak up, organise themselves, and hold leaders accountable, they help to preserve the true spirit of democracy.

He, however, warned that when citizens become silent, indifferent, or disengaged from governance, power gradually shifts away from the public and concentrates in the hands of a few individuals.
Salawu further explained that the strength of any democratic system lies in citizens who recognise that their voice, vote, and participation are not mere privileges but responsibilities that must be actively exercised.
He added that meaningful change begins when ordinary people refuse to surrender their power and instead use it to demand leadership that genuinely serves the interests of the people.
The Apero Mekunu Movement convener therefore urged citizens to remain conscious of their civic responsibilities and continue to participate actively in shaping the future of their communities and the nation at large.
