A civic advocate, Akeem Salawu, has emphasised the need for greater voter awareness and participation, stating that the true strength of democracy lies in the power of the electorate rather than political office holders. Salawu, who is the convener of Ilana Mekunu, noted that while positions of authority may appear dominant, they are ultimately sustained by the will of the people expressed through the ballot.
Speaking on the importance of civic consciousness, Salawu said, “The ballot is stronger than the throne when citizens understand their power.” He explained that democratic authority is not inherent in leadership positions but is granted by citizens who determine who governs them. According to him, when voters recognise that their votes are not merely a constitutional right but a decisive tool for shaping governance, the balance of power naturally shifts back to the populace.
He further stressed that individual votes, though seemingly insignificant, collectively possess the capacity to redefine the political direction of a nation. Salawu urged citizens to become more intentional and informed in their electoral decisions, adding that sustainable democratic development depends on an enlightened and engaged electorate.
Highlighting the essence of democratic governance, he maintained that leadership accountability is driven by public awareness and participation. “The real strength of democracy is not in the authority of leaders, but in the awareness of the people,” he said, noting that citizens have the responsibility to build, correct, and, when necessary, change leadership through peaceful electoral processes.
Salawu concluded that a politically conscious society remains the strongest safeguard against the abuse of power, reiterating that when citizens fully understand and exercise their rights, the ballot will always outweigh any form of inherited or imposed authority.
