Alli Faults Makinde Over Delay in Passage of Tax Harmonisation Law, Promises 100-Day Action

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Oyo State, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, has called on Governor Seyi Makinde to facilitate the passage of the Tax Harmonisation Law, citing concerns over alleged multiple taxation and illegal revenue collections across the state.
Alli, in a statement, expressed concern over what he described as the state government’s lack of commitment to domesticating the legislation, warning that the situation had continued to expose farmers, traders, transporters and small-scale business owners to arbitrary levies.

He alleged that non-state actors parading themselves as revenue agents had been mounting illegal roadblocks and imposing multiple charges on farmers transporting agricultural produce from Oyo North to Ibadan.
According to him, business owners conveying goods from Ibadan to other parts of the state have also complained of being subjected to multiple levies at different points along major roads.
The APC candidate argued that such practices increase the cost of transporting goods, reduce the profit margins of farmers and small-scale entrepreneurs, and ultimately contribute to rising prices of basic commodities.

He said the domestication of the Tax Harmonisation Law would provide a framework for streamlining tax administration, eliminating unauthorised collections and curbing the activities of illegal revenue collectors.

Alli maintained that residents and business operators deserved a tax system that would promote economic activities rather than impose additional financial burdens on them.
He further claimed that several states had already passed the legislation, while others were making efforts to complete the process, expressing disappointment that Oyo State had yet to follow suit.
The APC governorship candidate, however, assured residents that he would prioritise the legislation if elected governor in 2027.
He pledged that his administration would ensure the passage of the Tax Harmonisation Law within its first 100 days in office.
Alli said the proposed measure would protect farmers, transporters, traders and consumers from multiple taxation while creating a more coordinated tax administration system capable of encouraging business growth and economic prosperity.
Editorial note: The allegations of illegal collections and the claim that other states have passed the law are attributed to Senator Alli and have not been independently verified in this report.
