2025 ITN Campaign – Oyo Government Aims for 100% Success

…Says Implementation will be ICT-based.

In a concerted effort to mitigate the challenges of malaria disease in the State, the Oyo State Government has assured its readiness to achieve 100% success in the coming ITN campaign.

The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, stated this at the commencement of the Micro-planning meeting for the 2025 ITN campaign with other implementing Partners. The Commissioner, who was represented by the Director, Secondary Health Care and Training, Dr. Adekunle Aremu, noted that the ITN campaign, in partnership with the Global Health Supply Chain (GHSC-PSM), WHO, SMEP, PMI-S, and Malaria Consortium, aims to distribute over 5 million Insecticide-Treated Nets (ITN) to households across the State for malaria prevention.

The Commissioner stressed that malaria is a global disease that is also life-threatening, with estimated annual cases of about 300-500 million. Therefore, the support from the US Government to partner with the State for the ITN distribution is a welcome development.

Dr. Ajetunmobi added that everything is set for a seamless ITN campaign in 2025, as His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde FNSE, has given full approval for the counterpart funding, demonstrating the State’s commitment to the campaign.

The Executive Secretary, Oyo State Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Muyideen Babatunde Olatunji, while welcoming the implementing Partners during the meeting, urged them to take a cue from past mistakes so as to achieve greater success in the coming one by ensuring that all the necessary arrangements are put in place. Arrangements such as storage facilities, adequate security of the materials, and proper alignment with the Primary Healthcare Centres should be looked into. Dr. Olatunji, therefore, assured the team of his 100% support for the ITN campaign.

The GHSC team lead, Pharmacist Sulaiman Hassan, who is also the regional director, and the Malaria Program Officer, Mrs Ochibe, both charged the Malaria Focal Persons at the Local Government level to be accountable and see the work as their own because they will be the reference points during the campaign.

Mrs Ochibe stressed that the essence of micro-planning is to intimate and relate with the malaria-focal persons for training, supervision of identified storage facilities, and line listing of communities ahead of the 2025 ITN campaign. She charged the Rollback Malaria Managers to communicate any challenges they face during the campaign through the appropriate channels so they can be resolved.

The Malaria Program Officer for the State, Mrs. Foluke Adeyemo, on behalf of the Director of Public Health, Dr. Babatunde Akintunde, also appraised the state government’s efforts ahead of the 2025 ITN campaign. She added that the implementation will be ICT-based through the use of a locally developed device called “ipolongo.” Therefore, State-wide coverage remains the campaign’s target.
