How PDP BOT, Ex. Govs, Others Foiled Plot To Install Makinde As Presidential Convention Chairman
The People Democratic Party stakeholders consisting of the national caucus, the Board of Trustees (BoT), and the forum of former governors as well as the former members of the National Assembly kicked against the plot by the governors to install the Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde as the chairman of the convention committee.
Governors elected on the platform PDP aim is to hijack the Presidential Convention Committee, same strategy they used on October 30, 2021, National Convention, where all the major committees of the convention were headed by governors but the strategy was foiled this time, at the last National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party.
Seyi Makinde, the Oyo state governor was said to be the preferred nominee of the governors for the chairman of the Presidential Convention Committee, a move to prepare soft landings for all the governors who are presidential aspirants.
It was gathered that Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi was the option B for the chairman of the convention committee if Seyi Makinde’s name is rejected, but the stakeholders consisting of the national caucus, the Board of Trustees (BoT), and the forum of former governors as well as the former members of the National Assembly kicked against all the plans of the PDP governors.
The position of the stakeholders is that the governors are some of the main presidential aspirants and that other governors are aligned with the aspirations of their colleagues. They argued that making Seyi Makinde or Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi even any one of the governors the head of the presidential convention would not guarantee a fair and transparent convention.
It was learned that the stakeholders met at various levels and agreed that the influence of the governors should be whittled down, at least to assure other presidential aspirants that are not governors of fair play at the presidential convention.
However, the test of the capacity of the National Working Committee (NWC) to assert its independence against the superiority of the governors surfaced, as the NWC eventually picked the former Senate President, Senator David Mark as the chairman of the Presidential Convention Committee.
