A 36-year-old Oyo state-born student, identified as Hammed, has died in the United Kingdom after battling advanced cancer. Hammed, who hailed from Ayete in Oyo State and lived in Lagos before relocating abroad, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning.

Hammed arrived in the UK in September last year to pursue a Master’s degree in Business and Management at the University of Plymouth, an academic milestone he had long aspired to achieve. His dreams, however, were cut short when he was diagnosed with advanced cancer earlier this year.

Despite the devastating diagnosis, Hammed remained determined to complete his studies while undergoing treatment. But in recent weeks, his health worsened significantly, making it medically impossible for him to return home to Nigeria as he had hoped. His condition deteriorated rapidly until his passing on Saturday.

Described by family and friends as warm, joyful, and selfless, Hammed was the youngest of four children and a cherished figure in his community. Those close to him recalled his ambition, kindness, and his remarkable strength in comforting others even as he fought his own painful battle.

Before his death, friends and supporters launched a crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe to assist with his care and ensure he received a dignified burial. As his condition declined and doctors ruled out any possibility of traveling, the focus shifted to arranging his burial in the UK, where funeral costs are significantly high.

The organisers explained that repatriating his remains to Nigeria was no longer feasible. “We are raising funds to give Hammed a dignified burial,” the appeal stated, noting that every contribution would help honour his memory and ease the burden on his grieving family.

Although approximately £5,000 was required for the burial plot and coffin, the campaign surpassed its target, raising over £6,000 before donations were paused on Sunday.
