Malaria Ends With Us”: Oyo State Reaffirms Commitment to a Malaria-Free Future on World Malaria Day 2025

The Oyo State Government, through the Ministry of Health, yesterday joined the global community to commemorate World Malaria Day 2025 with a call to action, urging all residents to “Stay Committed” in the fight against malaria.
The event, held at the Akinyele Local Government Secretariat in Moniya, brought together key stakeholders, development partners, healthcare professionals, and community leaders under this year’s global theme: “Malaria Ends With Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite.”
Delivering the keynote address, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, highlighted the ongoing burden of malaria in vulnerable populations and emphasized the need for sustained investment, innovation, and community engagement to eradicate the disease.
“Malaria continues to rob our children, pregnant women, and communities of health and opportunity. But with science, partnerships, and political will, we are changing the narrative. Today, we recommit ourselves to a future where no one dies from a preventable disease,” Dr. Ajetunmobi declared.

She commended His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, for his unwavering leadership and strategic investment in public health, noting key achievements such as the full operationalization of Oyo State’s malaria reference laboratory and the release of counterpart funding for the upcoming insecticide-treated net (ITN) campaign.
Dr. Ajetunmobi also acknowledged Hon. Akinwole Akinleye, Chairman of Akinyele LGA, for his proactive public health leadership and the Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Jola Moses, for his exceptional frontline work in malaria prevention and control.

The event showcased the state’s integrated malaria response strategy, including improved surveillance, expanded access to rapid diagnostic testing and treatment, and robust collaboration with key partners such as the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP), WHO, PMI-S, GHSC-PSM, Rotary, and the Malaria Consortium.
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Oyo State Ministry of Health, Dr. Akintunde Ayinde, emphasized the need for continuous effort and community ownership:
“This year’s theme—‘Malaria Ends With Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite’—reminds us to reignite the momentum that has helped reduce malaria, reinvest more resources, and reimagine new solutions to end it for good,” he stated.
Representing the Executive Chairman of Akinyele LGA, the Head of Local Government Administration, Mrs. Olaronke Sarah Ige, encouraged citizens to take malaria prevention seriously, urging the proper use of insecticide-treated nets and prompt visits to appropriate healthcare facilities for diagnosis and treatment.
In their respective remarks, representatives of development partners, including the World Health Organization and Malaria Consortium, pledged their continued collaboration and support for malaria elimination in Oyo State.
The event concluded with free malaria testing, distribution of prevention materials, health education sessions, and a road walk to raise public awareness across communities.
