The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Oyo State Chapter, has called on Governor Seyi Makinde to transfer retirees of the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) to the mainstream Oyo State Pension Board. The appeal was made during a press conference held at the Pensioners’ House in Ibadan on Wednesday.
Chairman of the union, Comrade James Osuntade, criticized BCOS and several Oyo State tertiary institutions for failing to implement the pension review approved by Governor Makinde five months ago. He listed the non-complying institutions to include Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, The Polytechnic Ibadan, Oke-Ogun Polytechnic Saki, The Polytechnic Eruwa, and the Oyo State College of Education, Lanlate.
According to Osuntade, these institutions claim they are awaiting a formal approving circular despite the implementation of the directive by other state bodies such as the Oyo State Pensions Board, Local Government Pensions Board, the Oyo State Sports Council, and the State Housing Corporation.
“Many eminent personalities have served at BCOS. We plead that their retirement should not be marked by suffering,” said Osuntade. “These are men and women who have worked tirelessly for the growth and glory of our state and should not be left in misery.”
The union urged the governor to act swiftly by integrating BCOS pensioners into the mainstream pension board to ensure they benefit from the upward pension review.
Osuntade also warned that continued delays might provoke mass protests, emphasizing that any such action should not be seen as rebellion against the governor but rather as a push to uphold his directive.
