A senior accountant with the Oyo State Hospital Management Board, Wahab Olabanji, has been sentenced to a total of 15 years in prison for defrauding job seekers under the guise of securing them employment in government agencies.

Olabanji, who served as the Chief Executive Officer (Accounts) on Grade Level 14, was convicted by a court in Ibadan after a 17-month trial, during which he was found guilty on a 30-count charge bordering on official corruption, obtaining money under false pretence, and unlawful conversion of funds.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Chairman of the Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency (OYACA), Justice Eni Esan (retd.), the disgraced accountant was found to have collected various sums of money from unsuspecting applicants who were seeking employment into the state Hospital Management Board and the Teaching Service Commission.

“The court sentenced the defendant to six months imprisonment on each of the 30 counts, with an option of N50,000 fine per count,” Justice Esan disclosed.

In addition to the custodial sentence and fines, the court ordered Olabanji to refund all monies fraudulently collected from his victims within three months, as restitution for his fraudulent activities.

Justice Esan reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to eradicating corruption in Oyo State’s public service, stressing that such convictions serve as a warning to other public officials involved in unethical practices.
