A socio-political group based in Oyo State, Apero Mekunu, has strongly criticised Governor Seyi Makinde over the state government’s recent decision to procure two surveillance aircraft at a cost of ₦7,763,360,000, calling the move “reckless and insensitive.”

The state government, through the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Dotun Oyelade, had announced the decision following the State Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday. According to the commissioner, the two DA 42 MNG model aircraft are intended to enhance security operations across the state.

The aircraft, he said, are equipped with advanced surveillance and reconnaissance equipment capable of identifying targets from both high and low altitudes. They are to be deployed for intelligence gathering and security monitoring in response to rising security challenges in the region.

However, the decision has sparked outrage from Apero Mekunu, which expressed concern over what it described as an extravagant and ill-advised use of public funds.

In a strongly worded statement, the group said:

“While we acknowledge the importance of enhancing security and surveillance across Oyo State, the recent decision to acquire aircraft(s) at a staggering ₦7 billion is deeply troubling.

“In an era where technological advancements have made Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, highly effective for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations, this level of spending is not only excessive but unnecessary. These drones can be equipped with high-resolution cameras, night vision, and real-time data transmission, delivering similar, if not superior, results at a fraction of the cost.

“The state could have saved up to 80% of this ₦7 billion funds that could have been redirected towards urgent public needs such as healthcare, education, youth employment, and rural infrastructure.

“This is not just a case of misjudged priorities; it is a reflection of how disconnected governance becomes when the voice of the ordinary people is ignored.

“Apero Mekunu stands for responsible governance and people-first leadership. This is a clear deviation from both.”

The group urged the government to reconsider its approach and explore more cost-effective and community-sensitive options for addressing the state’s security needs.

As of press time, the state government has not issued a response to the criticism.
