………..Urge Makinde to Revert to the Original 75 Metres

Residents of communities along the Ibadan Circular Road corridor Ibadan Circular Road corridor have formally presented their concerns and expectations to the Oyo State Government, calling for justice, fairness, and due process in the execution of the multi-billion-naira infrastructure project.

The submission was made on December 5, 2025, during the maiden arbitration meeting held at the office of the Oyo State New Towns and Cities Development Agency (OYSNTCDA), where government officials met with community representatives from the six affected Local Government Areas.

Residents from Oluyole, Ona Ara, Egbeda, Lagelu, Akinyele, and Ido emphasized that they fully support the Circular Road initiative, describing it as a critical development effort for the state’s economic and infrastructural growth.

However, they expressed deep concern over attempts to extend the corridor beyond the originally approved 75-metre acquisition on both sides, a move they warned could cause widespread suffering, displacement, and mistrust among affected communities.

They recalled that the original 75-metre stretch was duly acquired, gazetted, and recognized by successive administrations after it was established under the former Governor, Rashidi Ladoja, in 2006. Expanding beyond this limit, they argued, would violate due process, expose the government to litigation, and worsen the psychological, social, and economic burden on residents.

The representatives urged the government to restrict the development to the legally recognized boundary, adding that any additional land required for industrial or commercial expansion should be acquired from undeveloped areas to avoid displacing established settlements. This, they noted, would help reduce compensation costs and ensure social stability.

On compensation, the delegation stressed the need for fairness and timing, urging the government to compensate residents before any demolition takes place to avoid rendering families homeless. They also appealed for those whose properties were previously demolished without adequate settlement to be revisited in line with the principles of equity.

The communities further emphasized that long-standing settlements within the original corridor should not be subjected to new or expanded acquisitions.

They maintained that residents must be allowed to process statutory land documents such as Certificates of Occupancy, building approvals, and Rights of Occupancy without undue obstruction or intimidation.

In their concluding remarks, the residents reaffirmed their cooperation with the state government and expressed hope that the newly constituted committee would ensure a resolution that reflects fairness, empathy, and transparency. They insisted that the Circular Road should not become a symbol of inequality but a legacy project that benefits every stakeholder.

“Our only plea is that implementation must be just, humane, and guided by due process,” the statement read, adding that the residents remain ready to collaborate with authorities to ensure that the project strengthens, rather than destabilizes, the affected communities.
