How We Prevented Another Tragic Deaths In Ibadan – Commissioner For Health

 

Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi has explained that it was the quick intervention of the state Ministry of Health that saved over 10 students of the Polytechnic Ibadan from worsening health conditions.

It will be recalled that several students of the Polytechnic Ibadan reportedly collapsed after inhaling a substance that was released into the air by an unidentified student.

Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi explained this in a chat with our correspondent in her office on Wednesday morning.

The commissioner recounted that she led the Rapid Response Team to the institution immediately after she received an update on an emergency situation at The Polytechnic Ibadan, where several students collapsed after inhaling an unidentified choking substance.

“We thank God we were able to control the situation at the Polytechnic Ibadan. It might have been another tragedy, but our timely response saved the students.

According to Dr. Ajetunmobi, herself, and his team from the Ministry of Health moved to the scene immediately after she was called upon at 2:10pm.

” Upon receiving reports of the incident, I led an emergency response team to the scene, we got there at 2:20pm, all affected students were promptly evacuated and transferred to various hospitals, including:
• Ring Road State Hospital
• Adeoyo Maternity Teaching Hospital
• University College Hospital (UCH)
“From there, we also visited the hospitals at 3:28pm. to assess the condition of the students, confirming that they had been stabilized and were receiving appropriate medical care.

” From what we gathered, eye witness accounts revealed that the affected students, who were from the Science Laboratory and Technology Department, were seated in their lecture hall after a test had been conducted.
A fight reportedly broke out between two students, and while others attempted to intervene, an unknown choking substance was released into the air, allegedly sprayed by one of the students. This led to several students collapsing with about ten individuals affected.

While reaffirming her Ministry’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of all residents of Oyo State and will continue to respond promptly to health-related emergencies, she advised The Polytechnic Ibadan to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure that those responsible are identified and brought to book.
