Atiku, Okowa Others Mourn Ibadan-born Canada-based Popular PDP Supporter, Odekunle

National leader of People’s Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, have expressed sorrow over the death of a Canada-based Nigerian lawyer, Lukman Ayokunle Odekunle, an ardent supporter of PDP who succumbed to stage 4 cancer.

Odekunle, a legal practitioner, who had extensive milieu in social commentary, passed away on Friday, December 29 at the age of 36, in Alberta after a prolonged battle with gastric cancer.

This comes three weeks after he took to X to lamented his inability to see a doctor on time in Alberta.

It was reported that Odekunle discovered he had stomach cancer that was spreading fast and leaving too little time to contain when he arrived in Edmonton in 2020.

Announcing Odekunle’s death on Saturday, one X user, #KayceeMaduYEG, tweeted, “It is with profound sadness that I bring to you that our dear brother, friend and colleague Ayokunle Odekunle, #oddy4real, lost his courageous battle with stage 4 cancer.

“Ayo was a brilliant young lawyer who sacrificed so much to be called to the Alberta Bar this past June whilst terminally ill. We had hoped for a miracle”.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ayokunle Odekunle Esq, @oddy4real, a staunch and unwavering supporter of my political journey and ideals. Despite facing personal challenges, Ayokunle never faltered in his belief, and his resilience and tenacity as a supporter were truly remarkable.

The news of his untimely demise due to cancer has left me profoundly disheartened. My heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, Halima, his parents, and the wonderful children he leaves behind. Their loss is immeasurable, and my thoughts are with them during this difficult time. May Almighty Allah comfort his family, forgive his sin, and grant him AlJannah Firdaus. Ameen.

Reacting to the news, Okowa said, “Ayokunle Odekunle (#Oddy4Real) was a rare young man.

Okowa, in a post on his X account on Saturday, praised Odekunle’s brilliance, dedication,n and passion for the party and extended his heartfelt condolences to his wife, Halimah, and their children.

Ayokunle Odekunle (@Oddy4Real) was a rare young man.

The insightfulness of his tweets, the passion of his support for our party and myself, and the intentionality of his actions that he shared with us online showed that he was a young man that was already doing great things and was destined to do even more.

Sadly, that young, brilliant, and promising life has been cut short by cancer. This is why, it is with great sadness, that my family and I send our heartfelt condolences to Oddy’s wife Halimah, their two beautiful children, and the PDP family.

We pray that the Almighty God grants the family that he has left behind peace at this difficult time.

Odekunle, a 2011 Law graduate with Second Class at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2012. He was later called to the Alberta Bar in 2023.

Lukman Ayokunle Odekunle was a Legislative Assistant to former NigeriaSenatee Chief Whip, Senator Hosea Agboola ” Halleyah”, between June 2013 – April 2015.

He worked with Kenna Partners, a leading commercial litigation firm in Nigeria. As a litigator in Nigeria, he took on many high-profile cases on behalf of numerous multinationals and secured victories.

Ayokunle’s practice centers around all aspects of Family Law, Immigration, Wills and Estate, and general litigation.

It was gathered that the cancer was stage four when he passed on Friday evening

Odekunle is survived by his wife and children.

A user, @Omojuwa, tweeted, “Rest in peace my brother @oddy4real. I am glad I spent time with you and your beautiful family on my visit to Canada earlier this month. You were strong and dogged. You couldn’t have done more. I love you, brother. Rest in peace.”

Another X user, @OgbeniDipo, wrote, “Rest in peace @oddy4real. You fought a good fight. May God bless your soul and comfort your wife and kids. Amen.”

@alexlobaloba tweeted, “Rest in peace, my dear brother, friend and a great mentor! The writing seed you planted in me back in Mayflower and the University of Ibadan will continue to blossom. Thank you for everything, I am grateful.  This hits to the marrow.”

@WunmiWonka stated, “Oddy was one of the people who saw the GoFundMe for my dad and amplified it without me reaching out to them. I only met him once. He then would reach out to check how I was doing despite battling cancer himself. I was hoping he’d win the battle. Rest in Peace, Soldier.
